Our Story and Our Promise
Hello! Thanks for taking some time to learn more about us.
Our names are Evan and Norm, and we founded Pasture Brothers in late 2018. We've been close friends since we were kids here in Orlando, but we never expected to start a chicken farm together!
In fact, we had been on quite different career paths (Evan in tech sales and Norm in welding) until one day we struck up a conversation about food and farming.
To make a long story short, it went something like this:
Isn’t it funny that you are more likely to know the person who fixes your car than the one who grows your food?
We thought so. And despite our inexperience, it inspired us to create a farm of our own to help rebuild the relationship between our Central Florida community and their food.
We realized we were fed up with the sight of cheery, cartoon-ish food labels in grocery stores when they had no relation to the realities of production. We wanted to know where our food actually came from!
The more we researched it, the more we came to understand the animals we eat mostly live in crowded indoor settings. They are injected with antibiotics and fed unnatural diets. The “farms” that raise these animals produce huge amounts of pollution and waste. Healthy food could never come from such an unhealthy system.
We were determined to find a better way.
That’s when we began learning about regenerative agriculture and our gateway into the field - pastured poultry.
Whereas 99% of chickens - even those labeled “free range” and organic - are raised in stressful confinement by a small group of corporations, pasture raised chickens live outside on perennial green pastures and are moved to fresh grass daily.
The movement provides a clean environment for the chickens to forage for bugs and worms (part of their natural omnivorous diet), while the soil receives a healthy dose of nitrogen-rich chicken manure that acts as a fertilizer.
It's a process that mimics the wisdom of nature - no antibiotics or pesticides required - and the end result is healthier animals, healthier soils, and healthier people.
We searched long and hard for a plot of land we where could test this system out, and we finally stumbled upon an ad for horse pasture rentals. We pitched our idea for healthy pasture raised chickens, and we were able to work out a deal for a lease.
After that, we immediately built our first portable chicken coop and sent away for our first batch of baby chicks which arrived in the mail just a few days later!
We've faced plenty of challenges as first-time farmers since those days that could have sunk us for good. But more than anything what we've found is a deep sense of fulfillment and joy in the work we do raising our birds and providing healthy delicious food to our community. That keeps us going no matter what. We are grateful to get to do this work!
We believe that people should know where their food comes from, that it should be raised ethically and provide real nutrition, and that support of local ecosystems is crucial to our community.
